Wenn ich groß bin
Guides and common questions about Wenn ich groß bin.
Getting started
How the city works
There is no tutorial and no start screen full of explanations. Children tap a building, it opens, and inside are people who talk about their work. Then it is back onto the street and on to the next house.
There is no correct order and no goal. You can wander the city in an afternoon or open one house at a time over weeks.
What age is the app for?
From five years old. There is no firm upper limit — primary-school children still find doors with something new behind them.
The app lives on illustration and storytelling rather than text you have to decipher. Younger children like exploring alongside an adult; older ones manage on their own.
Does my child need to be able to read?
No. Everything is read aloud. Every text in the app is narrated, so children can explore the whole city even before they read, or just as they are starting to.
That is why the app works from age five — and why it also suits children who find reading difficult.
For parents
Is the app safe for my child?
Yes — not through a setting, but through what is simply not in it: no advertising, no links leading out of the app, no chats, no strangers. There is nowhere a child could accidentally end up.
Locking the device to the app
Guided Access keeps the iPad on this one app until you enter a code. Set it up once under Settings › Accessibility › Guided Access, then press the side button three times inside the app.
Limiting playing time
Under Settings › Screen Time › App Limits you set how long the app may be used each day. iOS then steps in on its own when the time is up — which saves the argument about who stops when.
What is the app actually aiming at?
Curiosity, not careers guidance. There are no aptitude tests, no profile and no recommendation about what might suit your child. We think it is too early to pin children down — and exactly right to show them how much is out there.
Progress and devices
Discovered jobs across devices
Progress syncs through your own iCloud. Both devices need the same Apple Account signed in and iCloud Drive switched on.
Resetting progress
You can: in the app’s settings you reset the progress, so the city lies undiscovered in front of you again. Handy when a younger sibling wants to start from scratch.
If several children share a device: the appeal of the app is in discovering, not in collecting — a house that has been opened can be revisited as often as you like.
Is a job missing?
Almost certainly — working life is bigger than any city we can draw. If your child misses one, write to us. We take suggestions from children particularly seriously, because they usually name something we would not have thought of.
